In signing up to the Alliance, members commit to using their influence to advocate for policy that supports an economy-wide transition to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. This includes encouraging national government to improve its emissions reduction targets in its revised Nationally Determined Contribution due out in 2021 and to set long-term strategies to reach the net-zero goal – and to support provincial and municipal governments to do the same
A growing groundswell of unity of purpose and ambitious action by the private sector, labour, subnational governments and civil society as demonstrated in the Alliance provides the support from actors in the economy that government needs to do more.
Further, alliance members can contribute to policy advocacy can be done through collective public statements, written policy submissions and collective meetings with policymakers in which the Alliance platform and commitments are promoted.
The Alliance provides a platform for members to keep abreast with developments and consultation processes in the climate policy space. The Alliance’s convening partners can hold briefing sessions for Alliance participants, and facilitate channels for their members to take up the opportunities for promoting the Alliance commitments and platform.
The idea of the ‘ambition loop’ is a positive feedback loop in which bold government policies and private sector leadership reinforce each other, and together take climate action to the next level. See The Ambition Loop for more on the concept and examples where business leadership and strong policy measures have spurred additional investment and action by businesses, accelerating the transition to a prosperous zero carbon economy.
